Total provides you with secure backup to a replicated UK data centre (DC), with on demand disaster recovery (DR). You benefit from simple, secure and reliable backup and restoration, paying for only what you use and the ability to deliver key services from Total’s DC, should disaster strike.

Total’s backup and DR service has been designed to eliminate common causes of failure. It provides you with simplified, secure and reliable backup and restoration, plus DR, combined with a significant cost reduction.

With Total’s Backup and DR as a Service you benefit from: 

  • cutting infrastructure costs – replacing your current backup technology/service, reducing (or eliminating) the need for quick restore snapshot technologies and eradicating the need for a secondary DC

What Total do

Total provides you with efficient backup to a secure, highly resilient, replicated UK DC plus on demand access to computer resources to deliver services from Total’s DC, should you need.

Total will work with you to ensure that a performant service is in place that closely matches your backup and DR needs.

Policy definition
A consultant will help you to define an appropriate backup policy based on your RPO (Recovery Point Objective), RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and data retention and/or compliance requirements. Since RPO determines regularity of backup and RTO has bandwidth implications there are often cost-benefit trade-offs to be made. The consultant will also help you to avoid a costly ‘one size fits all’ approach by tailoring RPO and retention policy by data type.

Veeam set-up
Total uses Veeam technology to manage your backup. As part of the service Total will provide the necessary licences and a backup appliance, install them, apply the correct settings and verify that the data is backing up correctly. If a current version of Veeam Backup & Replication is already deployed Total will check settings, add Veeam Cloud Connect and verify that data is backing up correctly.

Data seeding
A full backup will be taken prior to the start of operational backups. Total will guide you through the process of seeding your data across to Total’s DC.

Operational performance
Veeam Backup & Replication manages regular backups in accordance with the policies set. It de-dupes data inline (calling only for new/changed data) and confirms the backup is complete and the data stable. As soon as data backs up to Total’s DC it is automatically replicated to a second DC.

Restoration
Restoration typically occurs at the virtual machine level but can be done for individual files. If Veeam is implemented as part of the service Total usually controls the console and restoration can be requested through the Service Desk. Alternatively, backups from the previous two days can be accessed directly from the on-site backup appliance. Customers with a pre-existing Veeam implementation usually wish to retain control of the management console and self-serve their restorations.

Management and support
Total proactively manages its DCs to achieve 99.99%+ availability and will extend this Service Level Agreement to your Firewall when also providing the site to site connectivity.

Total provides a Service Desk for operational support and Third Line Support for more complex queries. Standard hours of operation are 08:00-18:00, Mon-Fri (excluding UK public holidays) but this can optionally be extended up to 24 x 365.

Retention
A month of daily backups are retained as standard. Where there is a need for longer term retention this can be held on disk, tape or a mixture and can be varied by data set to achieve the optimum solution for you.

DR
Additionally, we retain the on demand compute capacity necessary for you to run core services from our DC in the event of loss of your primary DC.

Pricing
The service is billed monthly in arrears, per GB of consumed storage plus a licensing fee per protected virtual machine plus any service extensions (such as extended support, prolonged data retention and connectivity). 

Prerequisites

Service delivery requires:

  • VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V virtualisation (physical machines should first be backed up to a virtual machine on your site)
  • deployment of Veeam Backup & Replication (or addition of Veeam Cloud Connect to an existing instance)
  • installation of a backup appliance (only for new deployments of Veeam)
  • connectivity appropriate to backup volumes and RTO.
